BURNABY NORTH SECONDARY PRESENTS

CORE COMPETENCY CHATS 2020/21

Dear Parents, and Grade 8 and 9 Students,

What are core competencies?
Core Competencies are student competencies (COMMUNICATION, CREATIVE AND CRITICAL THINKING, SOCIAL AND PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY)  that are not necessarily tied to specific subjects, but can be seen as general skills that are learned across the curriculum and are important for students to succeed in and outside school. These competencies are part of the BC Curriculum, and students are asked to review their progress in the Core Competencies throughout the year. Schools will report on student progress in their final report cards in June.

How will student progress be assessed at Burnaby North? Students will have a short interview with an assigned teacher to present and discuss their own progress in the context of the core competencies on May 5, 2021. There will be several opportunities for students to review their own progress and prepare for these interviews. The final report card will include a completion report.

How can students stay informed?  Students and parents will receive specifics via email, and can stay informed through
their quarter 3 classes, this web site, as well as through an MS Team that will be created in OFFICE 365 for each grade.

This website will continue to help you complete your Core Competency booklets and prepare your interviews.

What are the Core Competency Chats?

CORE COMPETENCY CHATS, MAY 5, 2021
 A conversation led by you!

On May 5, 2021, between 2 and 3 pm, you will be chatting with an assigned Core Competency teacher about how you feel you have progressed in your ability to COMMUNICATE AND COLLABORATE, THINK CRITICALLY AND CREATIVELY, AND SHOW PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY THIS SCHOOL YEAR 2020/21 AT SCHOOL AND IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE.
Chats are approximately 5 minutes long.

How will you get prepared for your Core Competency Chat?

During your classes in February, March, and April, you will reflect on your strengths and areas of growth within each Core Competency.  You will be taught how to use the BNSS Learning Portfolio to self-assess these strengths and areas of growth. You are also part of our Core Competency Chat MS Team for grade 8s or grade 9s (on OFFICE 365) and find instruction, the booklets, and a chat group that you can post questions into there. This website will also continuously be updated

The Big Question for your CCC:

How have you developed in the Core Competencies throughout the past year?

Your Learning Portfolio will guide you through your Core Competency Chat.  By using and demonstrating it, you will be able to discuss your strengths and areas of growth within each Core Competency.  You will also understand how these Core Competencies may inter-connect. You are encouraged to bring other pieces of evidence, for example pictures, projects, videos or portfolios, to support your chat and help lead the conversation. We will provide more specific instruction in quarter 3.
